Background
The Human Rights Remedy (also called the Remedy) is a plan to reduce discrimination against people with disabilities in Nova Scotia. The Nova Scotia Department of Opportunities and Social Development (OSD) is leading the work to make the Remedy happen.
Evaluation means finding out what is working well and not working as well with the Remedy. It also means checking to see if the changes are making a difference for people with disabilities. The evaluation of the Remedy is a required part of the changes that are happening. It is being done by a team from Research Power Inc. and Cape Breton University. People with disabilities are also part of the evaluation team.
How To Participate
We want to hear from people about their experiences with the Remedy. This includes:
- People with disabilities, especially those that receive support through the Disability Support Program (DSP)
- Family members and supporters of people with disabilities
- Service providers funded through the DSP
- DSP staff
Your feedback will help shape how the Remedy is implemented. There are two ways you can participate in the evaluation.
1. Complete a Survey:
Share your experiences and suggestions for improvement through our online surveys:
Survey for people with disabilities, including Disability Support Program (DSP) participants
Survey for family members and supporters of people with disabilities
Survey for service providers funded through the DSP
You can complete the survey online or on paper. Click on the survey links above to download and print a paper copy and get instructions on where to send your completed paper survey.

You can complete the surveys until Saturday, November 21, 2026.
2. Register for a Virtual Focus Group:
We will be hosting virtual focus groups between October 15 and November 21, 2026 for:
- People with disabilities, including Disability Support Program (DSP) participants
- Family members and supporters of people with disabilities
- Service providers funded through the DSP
- DSP staff
This short video explains what focus groups are and how they work. The focus groups will take place virtually using Zoom. You will need to provide an email address to register.
People with disabilities and family members/supporters will receive a $50 honorarium to participate in the focus groups.
We are committed to making participation in the focus groups accessible. Available supports include:
- Closed captioning
- Plain language materials
- Materials provided in advance
- Participants can have a support person attend with them
- ASL interpretation and other supports available upon request
